The Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programmes that ARD runs are geared toward expanding access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services while simultaneously building the capacity of local communities to manage WASH interventions at the community level. Our programmes in Somalia have helped tens of thousands of members of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) community as well as other members of the vulnerable host community.

Diseases that are caused by a lack of clean water and sanitation, such as diarrhea and malaria, continue to be the leading cause of death in children under the age of five. This is primarily the result of a high proportion of water supply facilities that are not functioning correctly, inadequate access to sanitation, and low adoption rates of positive hygiene practices.

Our programmes have as their overarching objective the reduction of water- and sanitation-related illnesses in the communities that we serve in Somalia and Uganda. This will be accomplished by the following means:

Expanding access to clean water sources - Strengthening sanitation systems - Promoting better personal hygiene practices.
